Breakfast + Healthy Gut

Is it the most important meal? The first meal? Maybe even the only meal of the day? The idea of breakfast, or breaking the fast, has changed in recent times. We're not going to dive into all of that here. We only wanted to know what is considered a healthy breakfast today if we were to eat breakfast as our first meal in the morning.

But what does healthy mean? Well, it could mean weight loss to some and lowering cholesterol to others. For now, we're going to focus on keeping a healthy gut. We noticed that focusing on a healthy gut often leads towards foods that help with weight loss, heart health, and memory, among others.

For a healthy gut, we found that we should focus on fiber, probiotics, and fluids for breakfast. Soluble fiber like oats and some fruits like apples or citrus are considered prebiotic so they feed the good bacteria in your tummy. Probiotics like yogurt are good because they're good bacteria that help with digestion. Fluids (think water and tea) are always important. We need to keep hydrated for overall physical and mental wellness. There are also studies that suggest we are dehydrated when we wake after a full night's rest so it's important that we replenish our fluids in the morning. Just stay away from the sugary stuff! =)

We like this approach of focusing on fiber, probiotics, and fluids because it gives us variety. We don't have to eat oatmeal everyday but we should find foods high in fiber like oatmeal. Oatmeal is great but we like to change things up every now and then.

Here are some ideas for a gut health breakfast in no particular order:
  • Oatmeal topped with fresh fruits
  • Fruit smoothie (you can even add frozen veggies for an extra healthy boost)
  • Yogurt and granola
  • Warm green tea
  • Coffee
  • Avocado and whole grain bread
  • Nut butter and nuts like walnuts and almonds
  • Lemon water
  • Chia pudding with fruit
  • Eggs
  • Overnight oats with peanut butter

For the most part, fresh fruits, whole grains, and yogurt are a good way to go. Water is a must-have for us if we don't get tea or coffee. Fresh fruit over juice, and we didn't see any suggestions for cereals but there might be a few good ones out there.
