We came across this article the other day about how nuts can help fight against long term weight gain. It's no secret that nuts are a healthy snack choice because they contain a good amount of protein and fiber to help keep you happy and content between meals, but this article added that new research shows nuts can also help reduce the weight we might naturally put on as we age. On average, US adults are expected to put on one extra pound per year. However, those who ate about 1 to 2 servings of nuts consistently as their go-to snack only gained roughly half a pound a year. That's a big difference especially when those extra half pounds start to add up! Plus, substituting nuts for cookies and chips can have the additional benefit of lowering the risk of obesity.
That's good news to us! Nuts have a ton of nutritional benefits and helping keep the extra pounds off is one of them. The only thing we'd add is that you should probably eat the nuts raw. Roasting them decreases the nutritional content and adding flavor is just adding more salt. We know. Who doesn't love a roasted bbq flavored almond every now and then, right? But if you get a fresh and high quality almond, walnut, or pistachio, they're already packed full of flavor so you really don't need to add anything else. Superfoods that taste good. Yum!
